Moving to Jacksonville NC: A Complete PCS Guide for Marines & Their Families

If you've just received orders for Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River, welcome to Jacksonville, North Carolina. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about your PCS move — from housing decisions to where to register your car, written specifically for the Marine and Navy families who make up most of our community.

About Jacksonville NC

Jacksonville is a city of about 73,000 people in Onslow County, on the coast of eastern North Carolina. It sits between Wilmington and the Crystal Coast, with the New River running through downtown. The local economy revolves around Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, and the families who serve there. About 47,000 active-duty service members are stationed in the area, plus tens of thousands of dependents, retirees, and civilians.

You'll hear the area called many things: Jax, J-Ville, Lejeune. Locals are friendly to military families because most of us are military families.

Before You Arrive: Timing Your Move

  • Summer is peak PCS season. May through August is when most rotations happen. Housing, movers, and rental cars are all in high demand.
  • Hurricane season is June 1 – November 30. Plan an arrival window that avoids landfall threats if possible. We get hit roughly once every 2–4 years; hurricane prep is a must.
  • School year matters. If you have kids in school, Onslow County Schools start in late August. Try to arrive at least 2 weeks before the first day so you can register and settle.

Housing: On-Base, Off-Base, or Buy

On-Base Housing (AMCC / Lincoln Military Housing)

Camp Lejeune has multiple housing neighborhoods — Tarawa Terrace, Paradise Point, Watkins Village, Knox Trailer Park, and others. Pros: no commute, you receive BAH but it's paid as your rent. Cons: limited availability, older units in some areas, wait lists can run months.

Off-Base Rentals

Most Marines live off-base in Jacksonville. Common neighborhoods:

  • Piney Green / Brynn Marr — close to base gates, lots of family rentals
  • Sneads Ferry — quieter, more rural, beach access
  • Hubert — short commute to base, more affordable
  • Swansboro — small-town feel, gateway to Emerald Isle
  • Western Boulevard area — apartments, condos, urban convenience

BAH for E-5 with dependents is generally enough to rent a 3-bed house in any of these neighborhoods. Local realtors can help you find a place sight-unseen and many will set up video tours.

Buying a Home

VA loans make homeownership realistic in Jacksonville on a Marine's pay. Median home price in Onslow County is well below the national average, and the VA loan limit covers most local properties with zero down. See our companion guide: VA Loan Guide for Jacksonville NC Home Buyers.

Schools

Most military families use Onslow County Schools. Schools serving large concentrations of military families include Brewster Middle, Lejeune High School (on-base), and several elementary schools near base gates. Onslow County Schools accept incoming students with PCS orders even mid-year.

Private and charter options:

  • Northwoods Park Christian Academy
  • Coastal Christian High School
  • Jacksonville Christian Academy

For homeschoolers, North Carolina has straightforward homeschool laws and an active military homeschool community.

Healthcare

Tricare Prime

Most active-duty families use Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune for primary care. Specialist referrals go to the hospital or off-base civilian providers. NMCCL is one of the larger Navy hospitals in the country.

Off-Base Civilian Care

Tricare Select and retiree families typically use local providers. The Jacksonville area has dozens of practices that accept Tricare — including dentists, urgent cares, and specialists. Browse our local doctors and dentists directories for options.

Emergency Care

  • Onslow Memorial Hospital — 317 Western Blvd, the main civilian ER in Jacksonville
  • Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune — on base, for active-duty and dependents enrolled at NMCCL

DMV: Driver's License and Vehicle Registration

North Carolina allows active-duty service members and their spouses to keep their home state license, but if you're going to be here a while, switching is straightforward:

  • NC DMV License Office: 1502 Hargett Street, Jacksonville
  • What to bring: Current license, DD-214 or military ID, two proofs of NC address (lease, utility bill), Social Security card
  • Wait times: Variable. Booking online via the NC DMV portal is faster than walking in.

For vehicle registration, NC requires inspection within 90 days of moving in. Find an inspection station — most local auto repair shops are certified.

Banking and Finance

Most Marines bank with Navy Federal Credit Union or USAA — both have a strong Jacksonville presence. Navy Federal has multiple branches in town. Local options include First Citizens, Truist, and various community banks.

Things to Do Off-Duty

  • Beaches: Onslow Beach (on-base), Topsail Island, Emerald Isle, and Hammocks Beach State Park are all within 30 minutes
  • Fishing: Sneads Ferry is a working fishing village; charters available year-round
  • Hiking and outdoor: Stones Creek Game Land, Croatan National Forest
  • Dining: Far better than the stereotypes suggest — see our restaurants directory
  • History: Lejeune Memorial Gardens, Beirut Memorial, USS North Carolina (Wilmington)
